Lunar New Year Celebration Concert

Mead Witter Concert Hall
Lunar New Year Celebration honors the traditional holiday that is observed in countries and territories around the globe. Join us for a free performance with a special program and learn more about dance and music inspired by Asian culture. Explore a wider range of repertoire outside of the traditional Western Classical canon and its inspiration!

The event program includes Indian classical dance, Chinese traditional ensemble, Kpop dance and other classical music: Bamboo in the Wind and The Jasmine Flower Fantasia by Chu Wnaghua, Ga-go-pa and Joyous Ong-He-Ya by Misook Kim, Song of Nostalgia by Sicong Ma, The Taste of Snow by Jiaer Zhu

Artists: Shri Naatiya Vidhyalayaa dance team, Asian musical instruments community, Kangwon Kim Lee, Lina Yoo Min Lee, James Waldo, Changyue Liu, Karen Szczech, Melody Ma, Junchi Li, Elsa Wei
*Due to technical difficulties, the virtual class with Emery Stephens will not be open to the public. The students performing will still use Collins, but voice students will join by a private link in order to hear Dr. Stephen's comments. Hamel will not be unlocked for this event.

Emery Stephens, on the faculty at St. Olaf, will be presenting a virtual guest artist class from 4:15-6:00pm. Collins Recital Hall is reserved. Emery Stephens will join online to share his invaluable expertise on his research "Singing down the Barriers."

JEFFERY MCGHEE

Jeffery McGhee, who received a DMA from UW-Madison and is on the faculty at Roberts Wesleyan University, will be on campus in February to present a program in celebration of Black History month.The program will be primarily a recital, with some spoken comments introducing pieces, and will include African-American art songs and spirituals. The art songs will focus on composers of African descent, and the spiritual arrangements may include some Non-African American composers. He and collaborative pianist Michael Landrum will also present a workshop with student participation, “Singing Spirituals with Integrity and Heart”. Click here

When Music Speaks and Moves

Collaboration with Dance and Music department.
Dance students will create/choreograph works by underrepresented composers, living composers or systematically and historically marginalized composers.
Multi-disciplinary performance will be provided.

2023 Featured Guest Artist: Artina McCain, April 5 &6 2023
It will present a two-day residency featuring Dr. Artina McCain as part of our 2nd annual DEIB Festival. The residency will center around a solo piano recital featuring Black composers, a Q&A luncheon, a pedagogical workshop (Who’s That? Creating a New Standard Repertoire), and a performance class. All events will feature historically marginalized and underrepresented composer.
